Everything You Need to Know About Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is an incredibly transformative time. But as with all transformative experiences, it can come with a host of changes and challenges. Having worked with pregnant women for the past five years through pregnancy massage and prenatal yoga, I've seen firsthand the spectrum of experiences – from joyful and relatively easy to difficult and even worrisome. Each pregnancy itself can be so different, but one constant remains: the incredibly positive impact that massage can have in supporting moms-to-be during this time.

Pregnancy massage is a treatment that considers all aspects of working with you during pregnancy. It uses safe, effective techniques to support the nervous system, address common pregnancy niggles and tension areas, and provide a relaxing reset for moms-to-be who, in this modern world, are still juggling all the life admin.

It's crucial to work with a trained professional during pregnancy. They are aware of areas to avoid, such as certain acupressure points, and can create the most supportive environment for you and your precious bump.

Is Pregnancy Massage Safe?

Yes, absolutely! Pregnancy massage can offer relief from back pain, help reduce swelling, and provide some much-needed rest. However, it’s crucial to ensure that your massage therapist is specifically trained in prenatal and postnatal massage. This special certification is vital because it ensures that the therapist understands the unique needs and precautions associated with pregnancy.

I cherish my training experience in this area, where I had the opportunity to work with pregnant women, hear their stories, and learn invaluable knowledge about the incredible journey your body goes through during this time. This training covered all the necessary safety and supportive techniques that make it possible to provide effective and secure treatment.

When choosing a massage therapist, always ask if they are certified in prenatal massage to ensure you receive the best care tailored to your needs and those of your baby.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

  • Relief from back pain and muscle tension.

  • Reduction in swelling and improved circulation.

  • Enhanced mood and reduced stress levels.

  • Better sleep quality.

When to Start and How Often to Get Pregnancy Massages?

It is generally very safe to begin massage therapy in your second trimester. However, many pregnant individuals would really like to have and could benefit from some nurturing touch in their first trimester. If you work with a trained professional, they will know how to support you even during the first trimester, although they may require a doctor’s sign-off.

Why is this? The first trimester is generally considered to be a more risky time for miscarriage, and the therapist may be concerned that if something happens, you might attribute it to the massage. It's a tricky area and will really depend on what you and the therapist feel comfortable with.

Which Techniques are Used in Pregnancy Massage?

The techniques used during pregnancy massage are generally similar to Swedish or Holistic styles of massage, using effleurage (light, gliding massage strokes) and focusing on areas such as the lower back, hips, and legs. The primary goal is to create a nurturing and relaxing environment for both mom and baby to rest and restore.

During a pregnancy massage with me, we will start with a consultation to decide together what you would like to focus on. This might include gentle lymphatic drainage for the legs and feet to reduce swelling, or working on specific areas to help release tension in the lower back. The techniques are tailored to your individual needs, ensuring that you receive the most beneficial and supportive treatment possible.

Choosing the Right Massage Therapist

Please remember to search for certified and qualified pregnancy massage therapist.

You can find recommended providers from Jing Advanced Massage and CTHA (these are my own professional association) and CNHC.

Pregnancy massage can be a wonderful way to relieve back pain, reduce swelling, and provide much-needed relaxation. It is generally safe to start in the second trimester, but with a trained professional. A personalised consultation ensures that your specific needs are met.

Before beginning any complementary treatment during pregnancy, it is important to consult your healthcare professional to ensure it is safe for you and your baby.
