Self-care is not what you think

Self-care is not what you think.

Either you are totaly into it or you glaze over when you see yet another post talking about it.

But what if I told you that it is not what you think?

It’s not about luxury spa experiences, fancy soap or expensive supplements etc.

Meaning it is not simply a luxury or an indulgence only available to those who can afford it.

It is for you, me and everyone.

Try these 5 tips to get you going on your self care journey!

  1.   Quality sleep – This is probably the simplest and most accessible self care tools you need to be using. Don’t take your phone to bed with you. Give yourself at least an hour of screen free time before bed. There should be some ventilation in your room but not a draft. If there is a street light out side your window maybe think of investing in some black out blinds. (Having said this I am definitely a fan of waking with the morning light, I guess you can’t have it all)

Nap – A great way to re-boot if you feel like you hit that mid-day slump instead of reaching for a caffeine hit. Grab a 20 minute nap.

  1.  Avoid over doing it- This applies to everything. As the old saying goes ‘moderation in everything including moderation”

  2. Stop saying yes to everything! – Stop being the one who everyone comes to when they need something. Stop being the one at work who always takes the shifts that need covering. You are basically saying to your self that your time is not as important as everyone else’s. And this is not just not true! Time is the only thing that is yours. Take it, own it and use it wisely.

  3. Financial independence – Enough said.

  4. Let other people mind themselves – They took care of themselves before you came into their lives. Or simply let someone else be the one to do the things you feel you always have to do from time to time. And watch how the world doesn’t fall apart.

Self-care is like a ritual, a habit it’s not something you do every now and again or when you feel depleted. It’s what you do for yourself every day, every week, every month.

You might notice that when you truly care for yourself, you are actually in a much better place to give to those around you. You will be a happier person, a more grateful partner, and a fully engaged friend.

The people who take care of themselves have the energy and strength to take care of others with ease because that care doesn’t come at the expense of themselves.

As always…

Feel at ease
